INVESTMENT IN WOMEN FOR GROWTH: NIGERIA’S CORPORATE LEADERS TAKE THE LEAD

Today, as Nigeria joins the global celebration of the 2024 International Women’s Day under the theme “Investment in Women: Accelerate Progress,” several major brands are breaking down barriers, promoting gender equality, and narrowing the gender gap.

According to the World Economic Forum, Nigeria has jumped to the 50th position in the economic participation and opportunity sub-index, covering 63.9% of its gender gap.

Union Bank of Africa emerges as a leader with 50% women representation, as eight out of 15 board members secure top seats, showcasing a commitment to diversity at the highest level.

Lafarge Africa Plc stands out with 45% women representation in key positions. Notable women like Elenda Giwa-Amu and Adenike Ogunlesi lead the charge, ensuring a balanced and inclusive corporate environment.

Guinness Nigeria matches Lafarge with 45% women representation, featuring top talents like Omobola Johnson and Abidemi Ademola. This FastMoving Consumer Goods (FMCG) giant is committed to fostering gender diversity.

In the telecommunications sector, MTN and Airtel invest significantly in empowering women through CSR initiatives. From entrepreneurship support to accessible capital, these giants tackle unemployment challenges while championing gender equality.

Despite gender diversity challenges at the leadership level, Unilever and Dufil Prima Food empower women entrepreneurs nationwide. Unilever’s Shakti program, for instance, equips women with vital skills, turning them into local vendors and fostering economic independence.

With over 46% of women in its workforce, Nestle Nigeria actively supports women’s careers through various initiatives. From mentoring programs to development assessments, Nestle demonstrates a sustained commitment to positive change.

Coca-Cola launches the Coca-Cola Foundation (TCCF) and Women In Africa (WIA) to empower 14,000 African women entrepreneurs over two years. Through funding, mentorship, and networking opportunities, Coca-Cola reaffirms its dedication to fostering entrepreneurship and economic empowerment for women across the continent.
