ASP Urges Ethical Standards in Digital Space at Stakeholders Forum

The Advertising Standards Panel (ASP), under the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON), held its Stakeholders Forum on June 19, drawing participants from advertising agencies, media platforms, client companies, regulators, and members of the public.

According tto the Director General of ARCON,The forum was held to address the growing concerns about unethical advertising practices in the digital space.The event served as a platform for key industry players to share insights on how to curb misleading, fraudulent, and inappropriate advertising as well as the Digital Space.

In his keynote address, Dr. Emmanuel Agu, Chairman of the ASP, emphasized the importance of regulation in maintaining public trust and protecting consumer rights. He spoke on the structure of the ASP and its role in vetting advertisements before they are published,He also highlighted the increasing challenges of regulating digital content and stressed the need for the help of advertisers and media platforms to comply with ethical and legal standards.

Barr Charles Odenigbo discussed the Legal perspective of the Advertising Law in Nigeria. Where he discussed the enforcement powers of the ASP and the penalties attached to regulatory violations. Under the ARCON Act, it is illegal to run adverts in Nigeria without proper vetting, with offenders facing fines or other sanctions.

The forum concluded with calls for stronger collaboration between regulators, advertisers, and media platforms to uphold integrity and professionalism in the Nigerian advertising industry.
