ARCON Strengthens Advertising Regulations as Industry Faces Integrity Test
The Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) has announced a major regulatory overhaul aimed at restoring trust in the country’s advertising industry.
The move comes as part of broader efforts to address the growing concerns over misleading and unethical advertising, particularly on digital platforms.
Under the new directive, all advertisements—regardless of format or platform—must receive prior approval from the Advertising Standards Panel before release.
ARCON is also publishing a national register of licensed advertisers and agencies, a move designed to professionalize the space and eliminate unqualified operators.
The council has begun enforcement on social media, where unapproved ads—especially those making health or financial claims—are being flagged and removed.
In addition, agencies must now meet stricter corporate licensing standards, including proof of financial responsibility and professional indemnity cover.
To fast-track compliance and penalties, ARCON has also established a dedicated Advertising Offences Tribunal.
Industry stakeholders say the reforms signal a critical turning point, as the council moves to rebuild integrity and accountability in Nigeria’s advertising landscape.
